A’s place catcher Aramis Garcia on IL with stomach virus, call up Austin Allen
The A’s placed backup catcher Aramis Garcia on the injured list with a stomach virus and called up Austin Allen prior to Tuesday’s game against the Blue Jays.
Garcia’s official diagnosis was viral enteritis, per the A’s. Manager Bob Melvin said he was told Garcia is “pretty contagious.” He said nobody else in the A’s clubhouse is showing symptoms.
“(Team doctors) felt like he was going to need to hydrate for a few days, be away from us for a time,” Melvin said. “And you can’t go with only one catcher.” The A’s have followed a pattern with Sean Murphy of two starts followed by a game out of the lineup. Tuesday will mark Murphy’s first time this season starting at catcher three consecutive days. The A’s play a day game Thursday, so whoever catches Wednesday night likely would not start the series finale against Toronto.
